British motor-racing team founded by Ken
Tyrrell 1970; he had run the Matra and March
teams in the two previous seasons. He formed
a partnership with Jackie Stewart and the
celebrated driver won all three of his world
titles in Tyrrell-run teams. Tyrrell's only
Constructors' title was in 1971. When
turbo-charged cars took over Grand Prix
racing in the late 1970s, Tyrrell continued
with his normally aspirated engines, which
were not competitive enough. He changed to
turbo power too late and his cars have
struggled to compete with Williams's and
McLaren's. They were banned 1984 following a
dispute over the octane rating of the cars,
but subsequently cleared.
