Acute infectious disease, often fatal, caused
by bacteria transmitted by lice, fleas,
mites, and ticks. Symptoms include fever,
headache, and rash. Typhus is epidemic among
people living in overcrowded conditions.
Treatment is by antibiotics. The
microorganisms responsible are of the genus
Rickettsia, especially R. prouazekii. A
preventive vaccine exists.
