Wading bird Arenaria interpres, which breeds
in the Arctic and migrates to the southern
hemisphere. It is seen on rocky beaches,
turning over stones for small crustaceans and
insects. It is about 23 cm/9 in long, has a
summer plumage of black and chestnut above,
white below, and is duller in winter.
