Language of central and W Asia, the national
language of Turkey. Originally written in
Arabic script, the Turkish of Turkey has been
written in a variant of the Roman alphabet
since 1928. Varieties of Turkish are spoken
in NW Iran and several of the Asian republics
of the USSR, and all have been influenced by
Arabic and Persian.
