Jet engine that derives its thrust partly
from a jet of exhaust gases, but mainly from
a propeller powered by a turbine in the jet
exhaust. Turboprops are more economical than
turbojets, but can only be used at relatively
low speeds. A turboprop has typically a
twin-shaft rotor. One shaft carries the
compressor and is spun by one turbine, while
the other shaft carries a propeller and is
spun by a second turbine.
