English dynasty descended from the Welsh Owen Tudor (c. 1400-1461), the second husband of Catherine of Valois (the widow of Henry V of England). Their son Edmund married Margaret Beaufort (1443-1509), the great-granddaughter of John of Gaunt, and was the father of Henry VII, who ascended the throne 1485. The dynasty ended with the death of Elizabeth I 1603. The dynasty was portrayed in a favourable light in Shakespeare's history plays.
