US physicist whose research centred on the
physics of weak interactions between
particles. In 1956 Lee proposed that such
interactions might disobey certain key
assumptions, for instance the conservation of
parity. He shared the 1957 Nobel Prize for
Physics with his colleague Chen Ning Yang
(1922-). Lee originally trained in China; but
a scholarship sent him to the USA in 1946,
working mostly on particle physics at the
Princeton Institue of Advanced Study and at
the University of California.
