Port on the Adriatic, opposite Venice, in
Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Italy; population
(1988) 237,000, including a large Slovene
minority. It is the site of the International
Centre for Theoretical Physics, established
1964. Trieste was under Austrian rule from
1382 (apart from Napoleonic occupation
1809-14) until transferred to Italy 1918. It
was claimed after World War II by Yugoslavia,
and the city and surrounding territory were
divided 1954 between Italy and Yugoslavia.
