Hostilities conducted from defensive long,
narrow, deeply dug trenches which were first
used widely during the American Civil War in
1864. Trenches were commonly used from the
advent of mechanized war until increased
mobility provided by the aeroplane and the
motor car enabled attacking armies to avoid
such large-scale, immobile forms of defence.
