Wheel turned by foot power (often by a
domesticated animal) and used, for instance,
to raise water from a well. In 1818, William
Cubitt (1785-1861), on the principle of this
ancient device, introduced in Britain a large
cylinder to be operated by convicts treading
on steps on its periphery. Such treadmills
went out of use early in the 20th century.
