Industrial city on Lake Onondaga, in New York
State, USA; population (1980) 170,000.
Industries include the manufacture of
electrical and other machinery, paper, and
food processing. There are canal links with
the Great Lakes, and the Hudson and St
Lawrence rivers. Syracuse was founded 1805 on
the site of an Iroquois Indian capital.
