Member of an African people inhabiting
Zanzibar and adjoining coastal areas of Kenya
and Tanzania. The Swahili are not an isolated
group, but are part of a mixed coastal
society engaged in fishing and trading. The
Swahili language belongs to the N Bantu group
of the Niger-Congo family. It contains many
Arabic roots and is used as a lingua franca
in many parts of Africa.
