Comic-strip hero created 1938 in the USA by writer, Jerome Siegel and artist, Joseph Shuster, later featured in television, films, and other media. In the German philosopher Nietzsche's work, his ideal future human being was the Ubermensch, or Superman. Superman was the first comic-book superhero. Born on the planet Krypton, he has extraordinary powers including the ability to fly; he is vulnerable only to kryptonite, rock remnants of his exploded home planet. Between feats of crime-fighting or rescuing accident victims, he leads an ordinary life as a bespectacled journalist, Clark Kent.
