Fish of subclass Chondrostei. Sturgeons are large, with five rows of bony plates, small mouths, and four barbels. They are voracious feeders. The beluga Huso huso of the Caspian can reach a length of 8 m/25 ft and weigh 1,500 kg/3,300 lb. The common sturgeon Acipenser sturio of the Atlantic and Mediterranean reaches a length of 3.5 m/12 ft.
