In education, the practice of dividing pupils
for all classes according to an estimate of
their overall ability, with arrangements for
`promotion' and `demotion' at the end of each
academic year. In the UK, rigid streaming was
unusual in secondary education in the 1980s,
and had disappeared from primary education.
