City on the river Ill, in Bas-Rhin
departement, capital of Alsace, France;
population (1982) 373,000. Industries include
car manufacture, tobacco, printing and
publishing, and preserves. The Council of
Europe meets here, and sessions of the
European Parliament alternate between
Strasbourg and Luxembourg. Seized by France
1681, it was surrendered to Germany 1870-1919
and 1940-44. It has a 13th-century cathedral.
