Ancient Roman town near the mouth of the
Tiber. Founded about 330 BC, it was the port
of Rome and had become a major commercial
centre by the 2nd century AD. It was
abandoned in the 9th century. The present-day
seaside resort, Ostia Mare, is situated
nearby.
