Industrial city in the USSR, capital of Orel
region, on the river Oka, 320 km/200 mi SSW
of Moscow; population (1987) 335,000.
Industries include engineering, textiles, and
food stuffs. It is the birthplace of the
writer Ivan Turgenev.
