Member of the Ulster Protestant Orange
Society established 1795 in opposition to the
United Irishmen and the Roman Catholic secret
societies. It was a revival of the Orange
Institution 1688, formed in support of
William (III) of Orange, whose victory over
the Catholic James II at the Battle of the
Boyne 1690 is commemorated annually by
Protestants in parades on 12 July.
