1. Greek sacred site where answers (also 
called oracles) were given by a deity to 
enquirers about future events; these were
usually ambivalent, so that the deity was
proven right whatever happened. The earliest
was probably at Dodona (in Epirus), where
priests interpreted the sounds made by the
sacred oaks of Zeus, but the most celebrated
was that of Apollo at Delphi.
