Adviser of the prophet Muhammad. In 634 he
succeeded Abu Bakr as caliph (civic and
religious leader of Islam), and conquered
Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and Persia. He was
assassinated by a slave. The Mosque of Omar
in Jerusalem is attributed to him.
