Ancient Greek city in the E Peloponnese,
which gave its name to the Mycenaean (Bronze
Age) civilization. Its peak was 1400-1200 BC,
when the Cyclopean walls (using close-fitting
stones) were erected. The city ceased to be
inhabited after about 1120 BC.
