Movement within the early Christian church
that strove to return to the purity of
primitive Christianity. It originated in
Phrygia in about 156 with the teaching of a
prophet named Montanus, and spread to
Anatolia, Rome, Carthage, and Gaul. The
theologian Tertullian was a Montanist.
