the same plant. Maize (Zea mays), for
example, has a tassel of male flowers at the
top of the stalk and a group of female
flowers (on the ear, or `cob') lower down.
Monoecy is a way of avoiding
self-fertilization. Dioecious plants have
male and female flowers on separate plants.
