Capital of the Kharkov region, Ukraine, USSR,

1,587,000. It is a railway junction and
industrial city (engineering, tractors),
close to the Donets Basin coalfield and
Krivoy Rog iron mines. Kharkov was founded
1654 as a fortress town. Its university dates
from 1805.
