War 1950-53 between North Korea (supported by
China) and South Korea, aided by the United
Nations (including the UK, though the troops
were mainly US). North Korean forces invaded
the South 25 June 1950, and the Security
Council of the United Nations, owing to a
walk-out by the USSR, voted to oppose them.
After a `concertina' campaign up and down the
peninsula (initially led by US general
MacArthur), which ended in the restoration of
the original boundary on the 38th parallel,
an armistice was signed with the North,
although South Korea did not participate.
