Annual plant Polygonum aviculare of the dock family, growing on bare ground including seashores. Often low-growing, but with stems up to 2m /6 ft long, the small lance-shaped leaves have bases that sheathe the stem, giving a superficial resemblance to grass. The small pinkish flowers grow in small clusters in the leaf axils in late summer, followed by seeds which are a favourite with birds. Knotgrass grows worldwide except in the polar regions.
