Town in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Federal REpublic of Germany, on the river Mulde, 115 km/70 mi SW of Berlin; (1990) 120,000. It is the former capital of Anhalt duchy and state. It manufactures chemicals, machinery, and chocolate and was the site of the Junkers aeroplane works. The Bauhaus school of art was based in Dessau 1925-33.
