Third largest city in Hungary, 193 km/120 mi
E of Budapest, in the Great Plain (Alfold)
region; population (1988) 217,000. It
produces tobacco, agricultural machinery, and
pharmaceuticals. Kossuth declared Hungary
independent of the Habsburgs here 1849. It is
a commercial centre and has a university
founded 1912.
