(Arabic `haven of peace'); chief seaport in Tanzania, on the Indian Ocean, and capital of Tanzania until its replacement by Dodoma in 1974; population (1985) 1,394,000. It is the Indian Ocean terminus of the TanZam Railway, and a line also runs to the lake port of Kigoma; a road links it with Ndola in the Zambian copperbelt, and oil is carried to Zambia by pipeline from Dar es Salaam's refineries. University College (1963) became the University of Dar es Salaam in 1970.
