Industrial town in Durham, England, on the
river Skerne, near its junction with the
river Tees; population (1981) 85,400. It has
coal and ironstone mines, and produces iron
and steel goods, and knitting wool. The
world's first passenger railway was opened
between Darlington and Stockton on 27 Sept
1825.
