An immunosuppressive drug derived from a fungus (Tolypocladium inflatum). In use by 1978, it revolutionized transplant surgery by reducing the incidence and severity of rejection of donor organs. It suppresses the T-cells (see lymphocyte) that reject foreign tissue without suppressing other cells that fight infection and cancer.
