Group of about 200 Greek islands in the
Aegean Sea, lying between mainland Greece and
Turkey; area 2,579 sq km/996 sq mi;
population (1991) 88,500. They include
Andros, Melos, Paros, Naxos, and Siros, on
which is the capital Hermoupolis.
