A region in the Karakoram range of NE 
Kashmir held by Pakistan since 1949. It is
the home of Balti Muslims of Tibetan origin.
The chief town is Skardu, but Ghyari is of
greater significance to Muslims as the site
of a mosque built by Sayyid Ali Hamadani, a
Persian who brought the Shia Muslim religion
to Baltistan in the 14th century.
