The main Soviet launch site for spacecraft,
located at Tyuratam, near the Aral Sea.
From there were launched the first
satellites and all Soviet space probes and
crewed Soyuz missions. It covers an area of
12,200 sq km/4,675 sq mi, much larger than
its US equivalent, the Kennedy Space Center
in Florida.
