Filter-feeding animal about 6 cm/2.5 in long 
with a fish-like shape and a notochord, or 
flexible rod which forms the supporting 
structure of its body. It lacks organs such 
as heart or eyes, and lives half-buried on 
the sea bottom. It is a primitive relative of 
the vertebrates.
