SI unit (abbreviation amp, symbol A) of electrical current. Electrical current is measured in a similar way to water current, in terms of an amount per unit time; one ampere represents a flow of about 6.28 x 10^18 electrons per second, or a rate of flow of charge of one coulomb per second. The ampere is defined as the current that produces a specific magnetic force between two long, straight, parallel conductors placed one metre apart in a vacuum. It is named after the French scientist Andre Ampere.
