Wheeler, Mortimer 1890-1976. English
archaeologist. As director-general of
archaeology in India 1944-48 he revealed the
Indus Valley civilization. He helped to
popularize archaeology by his television
appearances. While he was keeper of the
London Museum 1926-44, his digs included
Caerleon in Wales 1926-27 and Maiden Castle
in Dorset 1934-37.
