1867-1965. French general. In 1940, as French
commander in chief, he advised surrender to
Germany, and was subsequently high
commissioner of N Africa 1940-41. He was a
prisoner in Germany 1942-45, and was arrested
after his return to France; he was released
in 1946, and in 1949 the sentence of national
infamy was quashed.
