Wells, H(erbert) G(eorge) 1866-1946. English writer of `scientific romances' such as The Time Machine 1895 and The War of the Worlds 1898. His later novels had an anti-establishment, anti-conventional humour remarkable in its day, for example Kipps 1905 and Tono-Bungay 1909. His many other books include Outline of History 1920 and The Shape of Things to Come 1933, a number of his prophecies from which have since been fulfilled. He also wrote many short stories.
