Wellesley, Richard Colley, Marquess of
Wellesley 1760-1842. British administrator;
brother of the Duke of Wellington. He was
governor general of India 1798-1805, and by
his victories over the Mahrattas of W India
greatly extended the territory under British
rule. He was foreign secretary 1809-12, and
lord lieutenant of Ireland 1821-28 and
1833-34.
