Stage name of Marion Morrison. 1907-1979. Nicknamed `Duke' from the name of a dog he once owned, Wayne was the archetypal hero and western star. His films include Stagecoach 1939, Red River 1948, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon 1949, The Searchers 1956, Rio Bravo 1959, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 1962, and True Grit 1969 (Academy Award). He also appeared in many war films, such as The Sands of Iwo Jima 1945, In Harm's Way 1965, and The Green Berets 1968. Other films include The Quiet Man 1952 and The High and the Mighty 1954. He was active in conservative politics.
