Wayne, Anthony (`Mad Anthony') 1745-1796.
American Revolutionary War officer and Indian
fighter. He secured a treaty 1795 that made
possible the settlement of Ohio and Indiana.
He built Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA. A surveyer
and farmer, he was briefly active in politics
before the Revolution. He assisted Benedict
Arnold in his retreat from Quebec, held a
variety of increasingly important commands,
was with George Washington at Valley Forge
1777-78, took Stony Point, New York, and was
then trapped by Cornwallis' superior force at
Green Spring, Virginia, but escaped and
served under General Greene in Georgia before
retiring to farming and business interests.
President Washington recalled him 1792 as a
major general to command the Army of the West
against the Indians.
