1905-1989. US poet and novelist, the only
author to receive a Pulitzer prize for both
prose and poetry. In 1986 he became the USA's
first poet laureate. His novel All the King's
Men 1946 was modelled on the career of Huey
Long, and he won Pulitzer prizes for Promises
1968 and Now and Then: Poems 1976-78.
