1903- . Irish physicist who, as a young
doctoral student at the Cavendish laboratory
in Cambridge, England, collaborated with John
Cockcroft on investigating the structure of
the atom. In 1932 they succeeded in splitting
the atom; for this experiment they shared the
1951 Nobel Prize for Physics.
