1889-1966. English orientalist, who
translated from both Japanese and Chinese,
including such works as the Japanese classics
The Tale of Genji 1925-33 and The Pillow-book
of Sei Shonagon 1928, and the 16th-century
Chinese novel Monkey 1942. He never visited
the Far East.
