1906- . US biochemist who explored the
chemistry of vision. He found that a crucial
role was played by the retinal pigment
rhodopsin, derived in part from vitamin A.
For this he shared the 1967 Nobel Prize for
Physiology or Medicine with Ragnar Granit
(1900-) and Haldan Hartline (1903-).
