British religious adviser from 1980 to the
archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Robert Runcie.
Waite undertook many overseas assignments and
disappeared in 1987 while making enquiries in
Beirut, Lebanon, about European hostages.
Worldwide efforts to secure his release, and
that of his fellow hostages, had proved
unsuccessful, Waite has now been released.
