1516-1565. Swiss naturalist who produced an
encyclopedia of the animal world, the
Historia animalium 1551-58. Gesner was a
victim of the Black Death and could not
complete a similar project on plants. He is
considered a founder of the science of
zoology, but was also an expert in languages
and an authority on the Classical writers.
