1894-1982. US film director who made epics
such as The Big Parade 1925 and Duel in the
Sun 1946. He has been praised as a cinematic
innovator, and received an honorary Academy
Award in 1979. His other films include The
Crowd 1928 and Guerra e Pace/War and Peace
1956.
